Preface: Welcome to 2025. Aventine's Auction No. 3 — a selection of numismatic items, is confirmed for this upcoming February. Consignments for this sale close on February 1st. All lots have an opening bid of $1.00 NZD, with no reserve prices. Our platform for this auction is TradeMe, limited to buyers in New Zealand and Australia. Absentee bids can be executed for a 4.5% service fee on successful bids.
This sale's highlight is a 1937 UK proof set, marking the first year of coinage issued during George VI's unexpected reign following the abdication of his brother, Edward VIII. Accompanying the set is the elusive 1937 Sovereign, its rarity owing to it being the sole year of issue for a George VI £1, and its status as a pattern coin.
Other featured rarity items include a 1935 Waitangi Crown, a 1967 Australia Pattern Dollar, and the iconic Biblical "Tribute Penny" issued under Emperor Tiberius. Additionally, the auction presents a vast range of European, Chinese, and American coins. Gold coins continued to be exceptionally well received in both our private treaty sales and auctions, driven by the recent record price approaching $4,900 NZD/oz. A noteworthy banknote highlight includes an immediate precursor to the Reserve Bank of New Zealand currency series, a Bank of New Zealand One Pound, dated 1929.
Our auction sessions close each evening over several consecutive days, from 6:30 to 7:30 PM, with exact dates to be announced. And to our valued bidders and consigners, both returning and new, we thank you for joining us.
