About Aventine

Aventine is a New Zealand firm originally founded as a private venture by a group of collectors and investors in coins and precious metals.

We buy, sell, auction, and serve as brokers of rare coins, banknotes, historical medals and bullion for collectors, estates, investors and institutions across New Zealand. We are an Authorized Dealer in Coins and Banknotes by NGC and PMG, the appointed New Zealand agent for Spink & Son of London, and a member of the New Zealand Numismatic Dealers Association.

Our History

1. 2015

   Founded in Auckland

   We established our first public New Zealand branch in Auckland.

2. 2021

   NGC and PMG appointment

   Aventine received our first global appointment as an Authorized Dealer with NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) and PMG (Paper Money Guaranty), two of the world’s most widely recognised third-party numismatic authorities. 

3. 2021

   The 1879 Bank of New Zealand £100 note

   Aventine acquired the 1879 Bank of New Zealand £100 note, which held the record price for a New Zealand banknote at $85,000 AUD. The acquisition was covered by the New Zealand Herald.

4. 2024

   Appointed New Zealand agent for Spink & Son

   Our specialist Joshua Lee was appointed as the official New Zealand Numismatic Agent for Spink & Son, the London auction house established in 1666. Spink’s connection to numismatics in New Zealand reaches as far back as 1897, when the Spink Diamond Jubilee Medal Series for New Zealand was issued to mark the sixtieth year of Queen Victoria’s reign.

5. 2024

   A Record Coin Sale for New Zealand: $130,000+ NZD

   Aventine sold an 1894 German New Guinea Gold 20 Mark for the equivalent of 67,500 EUR to a private collector in New Zealand.

6. 2025

   Repatriation of the first RBNZ-issued banknote

   Aventine acquired and returned to New Zealand the first banknote issued by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, formerly ex Aventine FPO No. 1 ( $105,000 NZD ).

7. 2025

   First North Island Cook Resolution and Adventure Medal

   Aventine was the first specialist authority to assess a 1772 Captain Cook Second Voyage Resolution and Adventure Medal unearthed in Wellington — the first recorded discovery of the type in the North Island.

8. 2025

   The Official Sale Host of the ANE Auction

   Since 2025, we have been appointed the sole Sale Host for the Auckland Numismatic Expo event auction, New Zealand’s largest annual public coins and banknotes event.

9. 2026

   C&B Auctions established

   Our Christchurch department was re-established as C&B Auctions, revolutionising the New Zealand auction market with 0% Buyer’s Premium, 0% GST surcharges, and with all items having $1 start bids.

10. 2026

    Katalognator AI Software

    We developed Katalognator, an experimental AI software for numismatics developed in-house and trained on the combined knowledge of our numismatic specialists and consultants.
