A 1935 Waitangi Proof Set, New Zealand's most iconic coinage item, is set to be sold via public auction at Spink and Son's 2025 NY INC Sale. This iconic New Zealand set contains six coins minted in 0.500 silver, which includes a Threepence, Sixpence, Shilling, Florin, Halfcrown, and the prestigious Waitangi Crown.
Each coin carries distinctive designs celebrating New Zealand's cultural identity:
- Waitangi Crown (KM#6): Depicting a symbolic agreement of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840 between British and Māori representatives.
- Halfcrown (KM#5): Featuring New Zealand’s coat of arms.
- Florin (KM#4): Showcasing the iconic Kiwi bird.
- Shilling (KM#3): Portraying a traditional Māori warrior in intricate detail.
- Sixpence (KM#2): Highlighting the now-extinct Huia bird.
- Threepence (KM#1): Featuring crossed Patu, a traditional Māori club.
What sets this particular set apart is its remarkable state of preservation. Uniform steel-grey toning, mirrored proof fields, and underlying lustre suggest careful storage and minimal handling over the decades.
Free from signs of improper cleaning or mishandling and remaining in its original Royal Mint case, it is a true survivor of New Zealand’s first distinctive silver coinage.
