In 1561, Elizabeth I's reign saw Eloye Mestrelle, a Frenchman, first introducing the concept of machine-milled coins. The following example is a Tower mint silver Sixpence dated 1567, minted five years before Mestrelle's sacking in 1572 due to the inefficiency of his invention at the time and the opposition by traditional hammered coin makers.
